Ladies Edition

They haven't exactly turned into Promise Keepers, but former Luther Campbell proteges H-Town spend much of their third LP making amends for past transgressions against women (specifically, for their lascivious back catalog, including hits like "Knockin' Da Boots"). That penitent approach, which leads the Houston trio to dedicate the disc to Nicole Brown Simpson and list 20 national helplines for women on the back cover, is hard to fault, but it is fair to note that the melodic content of Ladies Edition is rather thin. A few tracks on the ballad-heavy 76-minute effort are little more than one-chord vamps with sound effects, which the strong grooves and gospel-tinged vocals of Shazam, Dino and G.I. can't redeem. The better cuts--like the Roger Troutman-assisted single "They Like It Slow" and the uptempo, up-with-women, "Don't Sleep On The Female"--paint H-Town in a most appealing light, as does their apparently sincere message. But paring down the offering would have made Ladies Edition a more attractive gift.
